Live the dream, dream the live

Flashworx - Happy Birthday Random Trax Mixtape

On the other night, I had a dream. I was in Geneva, eating honey chicken in a Japanese restaurant with my friends Flashworx. We were dealing with their news and they were telling me after having released their first EP, they would stop doing remixes and focus on their album. Then we were in a famous nightclub of the city, for them to DJ.
After a few tracks, Mike turned on the mic and said tonight we're celebrating Random Trax's first birthday, you know the famous blog of our friend Nico, and this DJ set is dedicated to him.
Later in the morning, after the last pieces of dreams had left my mind, I found in my mail these few words from Mike 'Hey Nico, here is our present for your blog's birthday'. Thanks guys!

Tracklist :

Jump Jump Dance Dance - Show Me The Night (Grum Remix)
FM Attack - I Saw Her Dancing
Knightlife - All Systems (Nile Delta Remix)
Passion Pit - Sleepyhead (Cassette Club Remix)

Shazam - Pool Party 2009 (Headman's Revolver Remix)
Visitor - Love (Club Edit)
TV Rock - In The Air (Grum Remix)
The Emergency - Too much (Shazam Remix)

Là où je me suis rendu compte que j'étais dans un rêve, c'est qu'il n'y a pas de club renommé à Genève... et que mon blog ne l'est pas plus!

I realized I was in a dream when my subconscient brought me in a famous club in Geneva... because there is no famous club in this nice city, neither my blog is famous!

Interview : Beaufort

Tiger Trailer by Beaufort.

Beaufort, despite a French cheese's name, is a Sydney-based collective led by James McFay, actor, director, music composer and model.
After acting as the Red Ranger for the year 2007, he produced and directed the Bag Raiders' Fun Punch music video in 2008, starring the Built On Some Wish stunt team, which is about to reach 1 million views on YouTube soon.
In 2009, he directed Tiger, his first long length movie not about modelling but the most hidden thing in modelling : the ego. While there is a tiny percentage of models who hit the big time, there is a huge middle band of young men and women who do it for years, decades even and live hand-to-mouth the whole time. Beaufort takes two of these young people and illustrates a romance between them, directing Rachel Blais from Quebec and himself, plus guests met across Tokyo and its numerous castings, during a winter season in the Japanese capital city.
A self-made movie, Tiger is served with an awesome soundtrack and has been accepted as the first foreigner-directed film ever into the Pia Film Festival 2010, Japan's most prestigious independent film festival that has been running for more than 30 years.

Here at Random Trax, your devoted writer virtually met Monsieur McFay to ask him some important questions.

Random Trax : How hard/cool is it to be a model in Australia?

Beaufort : I haven't been a model in Australia since 2003, when it was just something I did occasionally. I didn't like it but I was able to use the money for good things. Most of the jobs were for Korean and Chinese catalogues and the crews were always very nice. From what I hear it's much harder to be a model here now because our dollar is so strong and there are less overseas brands wanting to shoot here.

You started as an actor, now you're directing your own movies and even acting in them. What has given you the desire to hold the camera and what is the next step in your director's career?

Next I'm making a clip for an Australian artist, then I'll shoot another movie, this time in Sydney I think.

She Don't Care (Tiger Version) Music Video from Beaufort.

You shall be so proud to be the first non-Japanese director featured in the PFF. Why did you choose Tokyo to shoot your movie?

Years ago I was working as a model in Tokyo and living just off Omote-sando boulevarde, a few hundred metres from the Dior building. It was early in the morning, before the crowds, and I came out in my pyjamas and slippers to make an emergency phone call to Australia at a phone booth. I was so poor I could barely afford the call, but around me were the crystal buildings for Dior, Ralph Lauren, Balenciaga, Luis Vuitton, Gucci etc. - the brands I was, figuratively, meant to be representing. I shouldn't have been there for many reasons, but I couldn't leave because I was under contract. It was a complicated situation with many emotions, a good starting point for a film. Also my friend Sean Walker was living and working in Tokyo and I missed him and wanted to work with him.

Beaufort - Fuck The Google

You may know Random Trax focuses more on music. And actually music is how I discovered you, immediately falling in love with your work. How did you fall into music?

You will be touring Japan with your movie for the next months. What are your projects after this trip? Will you set up a live show for Beaufort? Will you start working on your own EP/album?

I'll release a book The Venus 200 later this year - it's a collection of short stories. Beaufort had a live show earlier for the Tiger DVD launch, but right now my drummer is doing a Phd and my guitarist is about to shoot his own feature film. They are good friends with their own dreams.

Beaufort - Kraken

David Grellier (College) took part in the 'Tiger' soundtrack with two songs from his 'Secret Diary' album. What is your relation with the Valérie Collective, who's beginning to be pretty hot here in France?

I only know David. He got in contact with me a couple of years back to make a clip for Teenage Color, which I thought was a wonderful track, but I couldn't. Later when I had some 35mm film stock left over from shooting Pomomofo's Island clip I asked him if he would like me to use that to make a small visual for Teenage Color. Unfortunately he wasn't able to develop the film, and I was broke from the Pomomofo clip so it never happened. However there was goodwill there and when I put his music to the film it worked very well and he very generously allowed me to use it.

Now to the classical stuff : Best movie? Best band?

I haven't listened to much music or seen many films in the last 18 months because I was tired from Tiger. But in general I think probably the Koreans are making the best films right now, maybe the best music too.

Pacific! - Sunset Blvd (Beaufort Dramatisation) *

On t'accueillera à bras ouverts!

We can hear some French words in your remix of 'Sunset Blvd', and may I become a monk if your nickname isn't French too. You seem to love France, could you think of coming here soon, to tour with your movie or... your music? We would warmly welcome you!

I'll be in Paris at some stage next year, but I'd really like to see the Millau Viaduct before then.

A huge thank to you James, and be sure whatever your future is made of, there will always be a place for you on Random Trax when it's time to deal with great sounds. Good luck for anything's happening to you later.

Thank you Nicolas. Hope to catch up when I'm in France.

Paul + Pete Herrs = Mindwalk

Paul - More Than A Feelin'

No, I haven't forgotten you, I've just spent some moving days, especially in Belfort, where before movement there were heat, exhaust and music. But this time is not dedicated to any epic stories of epic-or-not-gigs, neither to take you sleepy with sweet dreams of sun, sand and twilight odes. It's the time to rest, to lay under a shadowed tree and enjoy the less-than-thirty-five-degrees temperature.
You want to have a fresh bath? Here is Paul's last track. And I'm not dealing with this scary German octopus wanted by all bookers on Earth (a Spanish football club's president already wanted to buy him for 40,000 euros).
No, I'm talking here about Paul, 25 years old, born in the middle of France and, well, beginning to bring back disco with his 'summer' tracks, each one more full of sun than the previous, this More Than A Feelin' being one more proof of what I'm telling you.

Mindwalk - Time For

But that's not all about Paul, folks. He recently teamed up with Pete Herrs (remember, symphonic remix of Phoenix) for a new project a lot more pop called Mindwalk.
Yes, it's time for holidays, which means change, time to have a break, to meet new people, you know, the girl you meet between two waves, the girl you try to catch between two drinks, the one you kiss between two dunes and you leave between two tears... The right moment to take care of beauty but cruelty of life!
