Top Albums 2010 : #30 - #21

Xmas being over, I found a little time to write this article, summing up my musical year in 30 albums better than the others (at least to me). I defy anyone to tell me 2010 wasn't good for music!

#30 - PVT - Church With No Magic [Warp]

2 vowels gone but still experimental and joyful, 2010's sound of Australians PVT is dark and light, like in a Church With No Magic.

#29 - Four Tet - There Is Love In You [Domino]

Four Tet has only one thinking head but 4 hands to play the beats which are created inside it. 5 years after his previous album, Kieran Hebden comes back as a master of electronic complexity.

> Angel Echoes

> Sing

#28 - Broken Bells - Broken Bells [Columbia]

James Mercer and Danger Mouse have well done when they fell in love with each other and gave birth to this genius album!

> The High Road

> The Ghost Inside

> October

#27 - jj - jj n°3 [Secretly Canadian/Sincerely Yours]

An album's length under 30 minutes? With the (frustrating) TDCC one, it seems to be the new way to be cool for the musicians under 20. And sometimes, it works.

#26 - Sufjan Stevens - The Age Of Adz [Asthmatic Kitty]

As Sufjan won't ever finish his tour of the 50 united states of America in albums, he'd better work on others projects, shouldn't he?

> Too Much

> Vesuvius

> Impossible Soul

#25 - Vampire Weekend - Contra [XL]

I've not listened a lot to VW's first album, but I did for this one, with his nearly 10 potential singles!

#24 - The Amplifetes - The Amplifetes [Believe Digital/EMI]

An excellent electro-pop album (and an excellent gig in Paris this fall) from these frisky Swedish boys.

#23 - SayCet - Through The Window [Electron'y'Pop]

A great album flying next to the mountain tops. SayCet are kind of our French School Of Seven Bells (which second album, a lot less good than the first one, is not present in my top).

> Easy

> A Night With Trees

#22 - LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening [DFA]

A lot of blogs have put it in their Top 10. If he's not in here, the last album of James Murphy is far from being the worst of his career.

> Drunk Girls

> You Wanted A Hit

> Home

#21 - Amiina - Puzzle [Ever]

This 4 Icelandic girls are multi-instrumentists and close friends of Sigur Ros. Joined by 2 guys for the live show and this album, they gave a very nice little brother to their first try Kurr.

Top Albums 2010 : Honorable Mentions

Well I'm a bit late on this, every blog or site has already published all or parts of their tops of the year in music. But, hey, the year's not even finished, who knows if a sweet thing couldn't be released in the next 15 days? Actually nothing's been released since end of November except Christmas song and Best Ofs and probably nothing will be anymore.
My tops will come out step by step on the blog, beginning with my Top Albums, then Singles and finally Remixes (maybe also Videos and Gigs as a mega bonux, but don't expect too much). If I manage to publish it all before Jan 1st, hope you will applause even if you don't like my choices!

Let's begin with albums I was unable to rank on my Top 30, most of them are releases I liked without being marvellous, good ideas on 2 or 3 songs and then nothing, or even a whole album a little bit sweet, too sweet to compete with my best of the year. So, to be light, here are the 15 albums with honorable mentions, and their 2 or 3 interesting songs.

Concours FNAC "Attention Talents Live"

Tracklist :

1. Sly Johnson - Hey Mama
2. Sly Johnson - Don't Justify Yourself
3. Sly Johnson - (You Are A) Star
4. Madjo - Le Nid des 100 soucis
5. Madjo - Another Day
6. Madjo - Cracheur de feu
7. The Bewitched Hands - Sea
8. The Bewitched Hands - Happy With You
9. The Bewitched Hands - Work
10. Jamaica - I Think I Like U 2
11. Jamaica - Secrets
12. Jamaica - Jericho
13. Cocoon - Comets
14. Cocoon - Dee Doo

Check that T.U.F.F.

Feadz feat. Boys Noize - The Ultimate (Original Mix)

The T.U.F.F (The Unfinished Feadz Fairytale) EP has been released digitally yesterday. The 13th(!) EP of 2010 for Ed Banger Records will be available physically next monday and may be the most dancy of the year. If Feadz isn't the most known when it's time to deal with Ed Banger, he's probably the best DJ of the crew when it's time to spin some vinyls.
Yes, 8 tracks may be more like a mini-album, but it may even be a full album, nobody would be unhappy because the production on this third mini-thing from Fabien Pianta on Ed Banger is high quality. After his career started at BPitch Control, the man we sometimes call Zdeaf released the Happy Meal and P*M*N*B (People*Money*Numbers*Business) EPs on Pedro's label and now, aged nearly as Jesus when he died, he comes back to his first love : a melting-pot of 80's & 90's influences, from Chicago-house to disco through hip-hop.
Some tracks may hit your ears soon in the sets of the most famous DJs in the World : Place des T.U.F.F. for example, but also The Ultimate, co-produced by Boys Noize or even Dial A Tool.
To have a nice preview of the EP before buying it, L'Enregistreur made a very good video teaser, a magnificent psychedelic patchwork which won't help you to sleep being more brilliant, but definitely deserves a play for denouncing the bad treatment Chinese/American people inflict to Hindu crowned cows/washed-out grandmas.

Bonux : Carte Blanche feat. Kid Sister - Do! Do! Do! (Ed Banger Records) _ Video directed by Fafi & Yué.

Cassius - Brotherhood

Surkin - Fan Out

Les Petits Pilous - Bielle

Teki Latex - Dinosaurs with Guns (Canblaster Remix)

Cut Copy - Take Me Over

Cut Copy - "Take Me Over" (Radio Edit) Premiere by modularpeople

Cut Copy - Where I'm Going

The 4 ozzies of Cut Copy have been very quiet since the release of their second album In Ghost Colours in 2008, hiding in a bunker lost in the middle of the Australian bush to record their third one, Zonoscope, which will be out on February the 8th all over the world, one more time through Modular Records, great label for marvellous austral acts like Tame Impala, Bag Raiders, Wolfmother... After Where I'm Going, a teasing track sent to all their fans during the summer, their first official single is called Take Me Over and brings back to life the wonderful synth sound which made them famous.

[Live report] The Amplifetes @ La Machine

THE AMPLIFETES - Blinded By The Moonlight (Clip officiel)

Festival Les Inrocks Black XS

The C-Mixtape by Joseph

'C' Mixtape by Random Trax

2. David Rubato - Circuit (Aeroplane Remix)
3. Modjo - Chillin (Buffalo Bunch Remix)
4. Phoenix - Consolation Prizes
5. Air - Californie
6. Blondie - Call Me

A short reminder of what Alphabet Mixtapes are : I choose a bunch of tracks I like among my music library, all beginning with the same letter and in random styles, then I submit it to an artist for him to mix it.
Don't hesitate to download it, burn it and listen to it while driving from home to work!

Joseph Who? Unknown for you, Joseph's an Aussie fond of the 70's and 80's and sharing his love for this period on his blog Hey Jo, a mix of pics, artworks and vids out from this era when the boys had flowers in their hair and the girls had the "peace and love" tattoo between their boobs.

Eat More Cake

Underwater by Eat More Cake

Eat More Cake are a four-piece band which music style's a bit hard to classify. They pretend to be playing "electronic down-tempo" but are also creating songs from pop to hip-hop. No tin, kind of rare for a cake, isn't it?
The song Underwater is what I like the most in their music, with a nice piano sound sticking to your mind, a relaxing tune ideal for a Sunday afternoon. The violins rising around 3:00, associated to a warm female choir, it's everything we ask to a cake just out from the oven : a soft or melting heart, with a lot of sugar and the perfect heat to reconcile you with the cold atmosphere of the Parisian streets on mid-October.

Listen to the whole Climb The Ladder, Live The Dream album on the band's official website.

Live report : We Have Band + Of Montreal @ La Cigale

There are two sorts of supporting band : the one you listen with one ear, hardly moving your toes, waiting patiently (or not) for the big name of the night to come and play, and the one that absorb all your attention, sending you an overdose of tunes to shake your legs, and when the bigger band comes, you're more tired than after having sex.
We Have Band is the perfect example to illustrate the second case : from left to right, Darren, Dede and Tom, 3 electrical English friends, found by Kitsuné then signed by Naïve for their first album.
At La Cigale last thursday, in Paris, they have shared with us so much energy, singing with a frantic passion.
I missed the intro because of a stop by the bar, then infiltrated myself in the crowd, just in time for the beginning of Divisive, and at this point noone would have been able to take me out. And why would have I left just when the band was about to (try to) explain us why they teamed up together and shouted out loud Hear It In The Cans all over England (and a little over France too because that's how I discovered them back in 2008)?
I have to admit I dream of hearing these kind of effective melodies more often in France. Like on WHB, despite a name of drug (what? Band's initials, seriously?), or on their first « real » tune which is kind of a tennis table game between the 3 band members, the ball being a word yelled by all the crowd : OH!
You might have understand my feelings, after having tried to follow the fascinating moves of Dede's hips during Time After Time and having shouted « This song don't break don't make me » on Honeytrap, I was totally exhausted but so pleased, convinced that buying the WHB LP would be the best thing of the week for my music library.

Of Montreal is a band I don't know that well, whereas the short survey I made during the quart d'heure of silent between the two gigs taught me more than half the crowd was there for them and had never heard of WHB. I was so sorry for them, they couldn't warm up correctly for the second part of the night! Dealing with this, a few moment after Kevin « Barnie » Barnes and his bandmates (not forgetting these bizarre monsters coming from nowhere) came on stage, a young and drunk English girl, mushy mouth, looking at the apathetic but massive crowd, asked to her drunk friend how it was possible all these « f*cking Froggy bastards » were not already jumping all over the place. The sport teacher told you at school, ALWAYS warm up!
But the late arousal of all these Froggy bastards was about to come, after the two swinging dudes (well, only dealing with clothes, nothing sexual there) had successively become SuperRouster, pyjama monkey, giant chessboard or even awful Things. At this point of the show, Barnie and his band, also known as Barbie and her friends, had already sung 4 or 5 songs from their two previous albums, Hissing Fauna and Skeletal Lamping, and one or two from their... tenth album, False Priest, released a bunch of weeks ago. It looked like it was enough for the front-scene-elbow-battle to begin. Not being an adept of these brutals love declarations, I left and found refuge behind the sound engineer, then I followed Darren (from WHB) on the balcony (supposed to be closed, yes). Ideal point of view to appreciate this crazy gig and the several stage diving and crowd surfing, from a moustache-wearing guitarist who kept playing, wired or not, to one of the two swinging dudes wearing red-wine-coloured overalls while the other was disguised in a pretty pig : was it an hommage to Weezer's « Pork and Beans » ?
