The C-Mixtape by Joseph

A short reminder of what Alphabet Mixtapes are : I choose a bunch of tracks I like among my music library, all beginning with the same letter and in random styles, then I submit it to an artist for him to mix it.
Don't hesitate to download it, burn it and listen to it while driving from home to work!

Joseph Who? Unknown for you, Joseph's an Aussie fond of the 70's and 80's and sharing his love for this period on his blog Hey Jo, a mix of pics, artworks and vids out from this era when the boys had flowers in their hair and the girls had the "peace and love" tattoo between their boobs.

Eat More Cake

Underwater by Eat More Cake

Eat More Cake are a four-piece band which music style's a bit hard to classify. They pretend to be playing "electronic down-tempo" but are also creating songs from pop to hip-hop. No tin, kind of rare for a cake, isn't it?
The song Underwater is what I like the most in their music, with a nice piano sound sticking to your mind, a relaxing tune ideal for a Sunday afternoon. The violins rising around 3:00, associated to a warm female choir, it's everything we ask to a cake just out from the oven : a soft or melting heart, with a lot of sugar and the perfect heat to reconcile you with the cold atmosphere of the Parisian streets on mid-October.

Live report : We Have Band + Of Montreal @ La Cigale

There are two sorts of supporting band : the one you listen with one ear, hardly moving your toes, waiting patiently (or not) for the big name of the night to come and play, and the one that absorb all your attention, sending you an overdose of tunes to shake your legs, and when the bigger band comes, you're more tired than after having sex.
We Have Band is the perfect example to illustrate the second case : from left to right, Darren, Dede and Tom, 3 electrical English friends, found by Kitsuné then signed by Naïve for their first album.
At La Cigale last thursday, in Paris, they have shared with us so much energy, singing with a frantic passion.
I missed the intro because of a stop by the bar, then infiltrated myself in the crowd, just in time for the beginning of Divisive, and at this point noone would have been able to take me out. And why would have I left just when the band was about to (try to) explain us why they teamed up together and shouted out loud Hear It In The Cans all over England (and a little over France too because that's how I discovered them back in 2008)?
I have to admit I dream of hearing these kind of effective melodies more often in France. Like on WHB, despite a name of drug (what? Band's initials, seriously?), or on their first « real » tune which is kind of a tennis table game between the 3 band members, the ball being a word yelled by all the crowd : OH!
You might have understand my feelings, after having tried to follow the fascinating moves of Dede's hips during Time After Time and having shouted « This song don't break don't make me » on Honeytrap, I was totally exhausted but so pleased, convinced that buying the WHB LP would be the best thing of the week for my music library.

Of Montreal is a band I don't know that well, whereas the short survey I made during the quart d'heure of silent between the two gigs taught me more than half the crowd was there for them and had never heard of WHB. I was so sorry for them, they couldn't warm up correctly for the second part of the night! Dealing with this, a few moment after Kevin « Barnie » Barnes and his bandmates (not forgetting these bizarre monsters coming from nowhere) came on stage, a young and drunk English girl, mushy mouth, looking at the apathetic but massive crowd, asked to her drunk friend how it was possible all these « f*cking Froggy bastards » were not already jumping all over the place. The sport teacher told you at school, ALWAYS warm up!
But the late arousal of all these Froggy bastards was about to come, after the two swinging dudes (well, only dealing with clothes, nothing sexual there) had successively become SuperRouster, pyjama monkey, giant chessboard or even awful Things. At this point of the show, Barnie and his band, also known as Barbie and her friends, had already sung 4 or 5 songs from their two previous albums, Hissing Fauna and Skeletal Lamping, and one or two from their... tenth album, False Priest, released a bunch of weeks ago. It looked like it was enough for the front-scene-elbow-battle to begin. Not being an adept of these brutals love declarations, I left and found refuge behind the sound engineer, then I followed Darren (from WHB) on the balcony (supposed to be closed, yes). Ideal point of view to appreciate this crazy gig and the several stage diving and crowd surfing, from a moustache-wearing guitarist who kept playing, wired or not, to one of the two swinging dudes wearing red-wine-coloured overalls while the other was disguised in a pretty pig : was it an hommage to Weezer's « Pork and Beans » ?

Through the satellite mind

Allez, musique maestro!

Remember Two Door Cinema Club? Grown fastly, but not far from being already forgotten. Well, I'm silly, not really, but soon to be replaced by polar UFOs? That's possible.
Satellite Stories are 4 Finnish guys, unsigned and more used to play with earless seals next to Oulu than jumping on the scene. Some even tell they saw them wrestling with polar bears looking like Macho, Macho, Macho Man.
While we could expect some cold music from a cold country, a bizarre phenomenon is happening : these guys (but also The Knife, Royksopp, The Sounds, Miike Snow, Robyn... and many more) are creating some hot and fresh tunes, just like the morning croissants, catchy songs making you shaking your ass into the disco-igloo till dawn, which won't probably come before months. Kind of a secret chemical reaction to protect yourself against the cold wind, something creating an ambiant heat rising to your brain? Better than alcohol, here comes Satellite Stories!
