Deuxième volet de cette série, cette fois-ci je vais m'intéresser à l'émergence de l'indie/pop/rock suédoise dans le paysage mondial. En commençant par Andreas Johnson, qui n'est certes pas le plus émergent mais surement le plus productif de tous les artistes suédois avec à son actif près d'un album tous les deux ans depuis 1995. Andreas Johnson, même si son nom ne vous dit rien, vous le connaissez à travers une célèbre pub du PAF, j'ai nommé Nutella, où son tube Glorious rythme la course du petit garçon à l'avion orange.

Contemporains de Johnson, The Cardigans se sont fait connaître grâce à leur apparition dans la bande son du film Roméo + Juliette avec le titre Lovefool, touchant une nouvelle fois le succès deux ans plus tard avec My Favourite Game.

Une chose frappante est le fait que sans télévision on connaîtrait beaucoup moins d'artistes suédois. En effet, le groupe de rock alternatif Caesars, dont les trois premiers albums sont sortis dans un anonymat complet en dehors de Suède, s'est retrouvé au devant de la scène internationale quand son morceau Jerk It Out est devenu la musique de la pub Apple pour l'iPod Shuffle. The Perishers ne dérogent pas à la règle, s'étant fait connaître dans la saison 2 de la série américaine Newport Beach avec plusieurs titres dont Trouble Sleeping.

On en vient aux groupes formés plus récemment, avec le multi-instrumental et multi-artistes I'm From Barcelona, groupe composé par 29 musiciens emmené par Emanuel Lundgren, un suédois qui avait écrit de nombreux textes et qui a décidé de réunir ses amis et les amis de ses amis pour interpréter ses chansons ; ils furent ensuite repérés sur Internet grâce à leur clip et signés sur le label EMI dans la foulée. Parmi ces 28 amis d'amis, il y avait un certain Emil Svanängen aka Loney, Dear dont j'apprécie tout particulièrement le premier titre de son album Dear John sorti cette année, la chanson Airport Surroundings.

Pour finir, le groupe le plus récent, Miike Snow, s'est formé en 2007 et a sorti son premier album en mai 2009. The Guardian a dit de leur musique que c'était la rencontre entre les norvégiens a-ha et les américains Animal Collective. Ce qui est sûr c'est qu'Animal est un tube, les remixeurs de la trempe de Crookers ou de Peter, Bjorn and John ne s'y sont pas trompés.



Second part of this Swedish review, this time I would focus on the tops of indie/pop/rock. Beginning with Andreas Johnson, certainly not the more recent but the most productive of all Swedish artists with one album every 2 years since 1995. Andreas Johnson was discovered in France with his track Glorious accompanying the race of a little child with an orange plane in a famous advertising for Nutella.

The Cardigans were discovered in the soundtrack of Romeo + Juliet with Lovefool, reaching again the success two years later with My Favourite Game.

A funny fact is that without television we would know less Swedish artists. Indeed, the alternative rock band Caesars, which released three albums only known in Sweden, jump on top of the international scene with Jerk It Out, which became the sound of the Apple advertising for the iPod Shuffle. The Perishers aren't breaking the rules, beeing discovered in the second season of the American show The O.C. with several tracks like Trouble Sleeping.

Now let's focus on more recent bands, like the multi-instrumental and multi-artists I'm From Barcelona, band composed with 29 musicians led by Emanuel Lundgren, a Swedish guy who wrote several lyrics and decided to join friends and friends of friends to sing it ; they became succesful on the Internet thanks to their video clip and then signed on the EMI music label. Among these 28 friends of friends, there was a man called Emil Svanängen aka Loney, Dear. I actually do appreciate the first extract from his last album Dear John released earlier this year, the song Airport Surroundings.

To conclude, the most recent band, Miike Snow, was created in 2007 and released their first album in May 2009. The Guardian said Miike Snow's « coolly emotional pop suggests a-ha meets Animal Collective ». What's sure is that Animal (which video clip you can watch above) is an epic song, and remixers as Crookers or Peter, Bjorn and John surely understood it.

La Suède, ce beau pays du nord de l'Europe, regorge d'artistes très talentueux. Entamé par le désormais légendaire groupe ABBA dans les années 70, le mouvement musical suédois n'a pas vraiment de porte-drapeau mais plutôt tout un tas d'artistes (dont on ne se doute souvent même pas qu'ils sont suédois) tant dans l'éléctro que le pop/rock. Un pays très productif au niveau musical que j'ai envie de vous présenter, en commençant par l'entité principale dans le paysage électronique de la Suède : la Swedish House Mafia. Ce nom n'est pas celui d'un groupe, pas celui d'un collectif non plus, juste un nom comme ça pour désigner Axwell, Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso et Eric Prydz, même si ce dernier n'en fait plus vraiment partie depuis qu'il s'est exilé à Londres, en tout cas les 3 premiers cités ne tournent plus avec ce dernier. Pour faire court, Axwell aka Axel Hedfors a rencontré Sebastian Ingrosso dans un bar de Stockholm, ce dernier (Sebastian, pas le bar) étant le meilleur ami de Steve Angello. Eric Prydz, hé bien quant à lui, c'est... Eric Prydz, plus connu maintenant sous le pseudo de Pryda.


Axwell - Watch The Sunrise

Pour approfondir, je pourrais commencer par vous parler des productions d'Axwell par exemple, comme celle qui l'a fait connaître en 2004, Feel The Vibe, ou comme Watch the Sunrise en 2005 et I Found You en 2007, deux chansons aux sonorités très "j'ai envie de danser sur la plage". Mais il est en fait plus intéressant de parler de ses collaborations, qui sont ma foi presque plus connues que ses compositions. D'abord, le duo éphémère Supermode formé le temps de la chanson Tell Me Why avec Steve Angello en 2005. Un mélange de la musique de Smalltown Boy et des paroles de Why? (toutes deux de Bronski Beat) qui m'a fait siffloter de nombreuses fois je dois l'avouer. Steve Angello qui lui de son côté a composé entre autres Voices et Straight, les deux seuls morceaux qui m'ont vraiment marqué. La seconde collaboration d'Axwell qui a elle aussi été effective pour un titre seulement, c'est le duo AxEr formé avec Eric Prydz pour la chanson 1 2 3 sortie sur le label de Prydz en 2005.

Vous arrivez toujours à suivre? Si c'est le cas, il me reste à vous parlez un peu plus d'Eric Prydz, Sebastian Ingrosso n'étant pas réputé pour des compositions en solitaire mais plus pour ses collaborations comme le duo Buy Now formé avec Steve Angello pour For Sale et l'excellent Body Crash. Eric Prydz, vous le connaissez-tous à travers son tube Call On Me (dont le clip est rempli de bimbos faisant de la gym) qui fut à la source d'une polémique dont la base était fausse. En effet, on lui reprocha d'avoir volé ce morceau au duo Together formé par Thomas Bangalter (des Daft Punk) et DJ Falcon, mais la vérité n'était pas là. Le morceau original, composé par un groupe inconnu, circulait sur Internet, mais le mixage étant mauvais Prydz a proposé à ce groupe de produire la chanson et de partager les droits avec eux. Cet original étant très joué par DJ Falcon dans ses sets, tout le monde pensait au nouveau Together car très similaire aux morceaux précédents (Together et So Much Love To Give). Après ce quiproquo, Prydz fut l'un des seuls à obtenir le droit de faire une reprise des Pink Floyd pour Proper Education en 2006. En 2008, il sort son single Pjanoo, qui m'a au moins autant marqué que Call On Me, étant musicalement très bon avec ce sample si particulier de piano qui reste dans la tête, et puis il faut avouer que les mini-danseurs iroquois du clip sont assez marrant!

Ci-dessous, la présentation des soirées The Dark Forest par la Swedish House Mafia, tous les lundis de l'été au Pacha d'Ibiza.


Sweden, sweet Sweden, this beautiful North European country, has so much talented artists. Launched by the mythic pop band ABBA in the 70's, the swedish musical movement is represented by a lot of artists from various horizons as well in electro as in pop/rock. A very productive country I want to present to you, beginning with the main entity in this country's world of electronic music : the Swedish House Mafia. It's not a band's name, not a collective's name, just a « random thought » to introduce Axwell, Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso and Eric Prydz, even if the last one isn't part of this Mafia anymore. To be short, Axwell aka Axel Hedfors met Sebastian Ingrosso in a Stockholm's bar, and this one (Sebastian, not the bar) was Steve Angello's best friend. Eric Prydz, it's... Eric Prydz, who you might know under the Pryda name.

To deepen, I could deal with Axwell compositions for example, as the one who give him his first success in 2004, Feel The Vibe, or Watch the Sunrise in 2005 and I Found You in 2007, two « I want to dance on the beach » songs. Indeed it's much more interesting to deal with his collaborations, which are almost more succesful than his compositions. First, the Supermode duet created for the song Tell Me Why with Steve Angello in 2005. A mix between the Smalltown Boy music and the Why? lyrics (both from Bronski Beat) which made me whistle so many times, I must admit it. Steve Angello who composed, inter alia, Voices and Straight, two songs I appreciate a lot. The second Axwell's collaboration, also made for only one track, is the AxEr duet created with Eric Prydz for 1 2 3, released on Pryda (Prydz's musical label) in 2005.


Supermode - Tell Me Why

Are you still following? If you are, I've to deal a little more with Eric Prydz, Sebastian Ingrosso not being famous for his compositions but much more for his collaborations like the Buy Now duet created with Steve Angello for For Sale and the excellent Body Crash. Eric Prydz, you know him throughout Call On Me (yes, the video clip where a bunch of hot babes are training very hard) which gave birth to a big polemic. Indeed, he has been accused to have stolen the song to Together, a duet formed of Thomas Bangalter (from Daft Punk) and DJ Falcon, but the truth was elsewhere. The original track, composed by an unknown band, was very succesful on the Internet, but the mix wasn't very professional, so Prydz gave them some help producing this track and divided the trademarks. The original track being often played by DJ Falcon in his dj sets, everybody was thinking to the new Together because it was very similar with the previous songs (Together and So Much Love To Give). After this misunderstanding, Prydz was one of the few privileged persons to get the right to cover Pink Floyd for Proper Education in 2006. In 2008, he released Pjanoo, which makes me feel as good as Call On Me, with this so particular piano sample which stays in your head, and you must admit that these little dancing Iroquois are so funny!

2 ans qu'on attend un signe de Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo et de Thomas Bangalter. 2 ans qu'on écoute en boucle Alive 2007 car comme tous on n'a pas pu aller voir ces monstres en live. 2 ans qu'on réécoute Homework, Discovery et Human After All, tout en essayant de se convaincre que les Justice sont aussi bons que les Daft Punk. Mais non, rien à y faire, on a besoin de Daft Punk pour se sentir bien. Alors quelle joie quand on appris que ces messieurs seraient les grands manitous musicologues de la suite de Tron, prévue pour 2011. 2011? Encore 2 ans sans les Daft Punk... Tout le monde sait que pour faire monter le buzz il faut dévoiler quelques miettes, avec cette vidéo de la Home of Tr2n, une salle présentant quelques artworks des motos du film et aussi un prototype en métal et en os d'une de ces motos. Rien ne serait complet si en fond sonore on n'entendait pas le premier extrait de la bande originale : 4 ans après la dernière composition de nos deux casqués, Daft Punk is back!


We have been waiting for something new from Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter for 2 years. 2 years spent listening in loop to Alive 2007 because like everybody we couldn't see them performing live. 2 years spent listening to Homework, Discovery and Human After All, while trying to convince ourself that Justice are as good as Daft Punk. But no, we need Daft Punk to feel good. So what a big joy when we hear these awesome guys would be the men who'll compose the Tron 2.0 sountrack, which may be released in 2011. 2011? Two years more without Daft Punk... Everyone knows some goodies must be revealed to rise the pressure, here is an illustration with this video of the Home of Tr2n, a room where are presented some artworks of the motor bikes from the film and also a prototype of one of these lightning bikes. Nothing would have been complete without the first extract of the soundtrack : 4 years after the last composition of our two helmeted kings, Daft Punk is back!

Non je n'apprécie pas trop de chevaucher des poulains. Je voulais plutôt parler de Foals, un groupe anglais de math rock. Attention! Ne vous méprenez pas, ils ne font pas des maths en jouant de la musique. Non, leur truc serait plutôt de ne pas jouer dans les règles de l'art quand il est question de rock, mais plutôt de battre la mesure à un rythme effréné et pas très académique. Loin, très loin des sentiers battus, ils transmettent une énergie fantastique dans leur musique un peu rock, punk et éléctro à la fois. De la musique qui donne envie de sauter partout. Pour cette fois on se contentera d'écouter 2 extraits de leur discographie : Cassius, sorti il y a un peu plus d'un an sur leur premier album Antidotes, et Hummer, sorti en single un an plus tôt, mais qui est lui aussi un fabuleux antidote à la morosité. On attend avec impatience leur second album qui est déjà en préparation.

Hmm, I'm not so keen on riding foals. Indeed I wanted to deal with Foals, an English math rock band. Beware! Don't be mistaking, they're not studying maths while playing music. No, their hobby rather be not to follow rock's rules, but playing at a frantic and hypnotic rate. Far far away from usual paths, they spread a fantastic energy into their music a little rocky, punky and electro at the same time. Music that gives you the desire to jump and jump again. This time we're just gonna listen to 2 tracks from their discography : Cassius, released on their first album Antidotes one year ago, and Hummer, a single released one year earlier, which is also a fabulous antidote to moroseness. We're now ready to wait for their second album, which date of release should be announced soon.
