Manchester doesn't belong to Cantona anymore...

...well, he's always the King of soccer, be sure this hoodlum called Ronaldo has not replaced him in Mancunians' heart.
But musically, Manchester is about to enter a new era which could be best than the previous one. Yes, it has to be said, the time of Joy Division (or New Order or Bad Lieutenant, call them as you like), Happy Mondays, Stone Roses, Primal Scream and even Oasis has ended. Gallagher brothers' recent split (at Rock en Seine 2009) is the biggest illustration of this end. Madchester from the eighties is dead, although we can see a kind of rebirth of this musical movement with Kasabian (from Leicester) or The Rapture, based in NY. But from the seedy parts of the third biggest English city is growing a deafening rumor : Madchester could be just about to re-emerge in a 2.0 version!

For Dan Parrott, everything started back in December 2006, when he began working for Channel M, a local channel of Manchester. Till May 2009, he produced musical shows responsible for the English TV debut of bands like Friendly Fires, Metronomy, Delphic, Everything Everything, The Ting Tings and hundreds of others. Sadly Channel M's music department had to close its doors, for financial issues. Far from giving up and with many contacts, Dan decided to create Love & Disaster, a company which main goal is to promote the Mancunian scene, where each bands are close friends, never hesitating in helping each other, very open-minded and ready to make Manchester THE place to be next year to see the music live.

The first L&D release is about to be released on January, 11th of 2010 ; it will be a 4 tracks compilation availble digitally or on a 10" gatefold. Note the same day will be released Delphic's debut album.

On the menu, a brillant Side A introduced by aerian rock of Airship, Kids's chorus being the top of the top, I think. A little bit like an anthem for a TV campaign against poverty, something like that. Like an advert dealing with kids forced to stay outdoor at night, in obscure and cold city corners. You see, being 21 in Manchester is not a reason to forget where we come from, all former children, sometimes afraid, sometimes left by our best friends.
To complete this side, let's welcome Dutch Uncles. With these guys, we enter a more scientific dimension. They play a math-rock as we like it, with ringing chords and nice piano parts. Although leader-singer Duncan Wallis is a bit weird on stage (I think he absorbed too much mathematic lessons), quality is the order of the day on O.C.D.U.C, which we could easily translate like this : Oh Christ! Dutch Uncles, Caramba!

As a double-sided vinyle is always full of surprises, we turn it with a bit of excitement. We're now going to deal with a sounding-like-a-soundtrack tune, Lastbreath, California from Jo Rose being not far from the perfect track to meet Eddie Vedder, a.k.a. singer of mythic American garage band Pearl Jam, on the original soundtrack of Into The Wild. Only 22 years old and already a great professional when it's time to talk of music industry, Jo lays his angelic voice on a pretty piano melody, sweet for our ears.
And now let's welcome Love & Disaster 1 conclusion, here it is : a (fabulous?) exclusive remix of Delphic - This Momentary by Everything Everything. In other words, it's the combination of two of the biggest hopes for 2010 dealing with Mancunian music ; there's no need to present the first ones, who are about to release their debut album Acolyte on January, the second ones ready to follow them as soon as possible with their recent signing on Geffen Records, a... German label. Oh, I was about to forget : this brillant mix between Delphic's cleverness and EE's madness is certainly the ideal finish for this compilation.

Let's hope for more Dan's great ideas, and nicely a follow-up seems to be already created in his mind. Indeed there's a huge potential on Manchester's music scene to make more compilations. Egyptian Hip Hop, May 68, the Lost Knives and Run Toto Run may have a role to play on it soon. But now we're just waiting for Love & Disaster 1 to be released, and the vinyle is available for pre-order here and will be definitely available on usual legal download places on January the 11th.
